Logo design for a documentary film

My good friend & documentary film maker Mary Patierno is making a documentary
about June Millington.I designed the logo and title pages. Mary edited my ( award winning!)

I've been a fan and reader of Seth Godin's for over 3 years.

When he announced he was going on the road - a different city every month -

Boston being the first - I volunteered to help. I ended up being part of the core organizing group -

an amazing experience and I ended up designing all of the graphics for the event.

This was the poster - it was also used for newspaper ads.

The same graphics were used for the Wash DC seminar.

I was inspired by Anthony Russo's art to make this music video for my daughter Sonya's
song from her new EP - Convict of Conviction. Evan Yeadon worked hard on making everything move in Flash. Very excited about this new direction and looking forward to work animating my illustrations!

I've done these covers for about a year and a half. Every month. Some months it is not easy to come up with an idea that I love, but I sweat it out till I do love it. This one took me quite a bit of time - but I'm very happy with the result. It was my idea to make the SEX big and bold. Sex sells - right? So why not?

My agent suggested I do a chicken.What the heck. Here is my chicken.
They kind of freak me out in person. When he was pretty little - around 7- my son used to feed them at the farm down the road as a job - we got eggs in exchange for his hard work. Sometimes he'd hold a garbage can lid as a shield to keep them from pecking him as I cowered in the corner - like every good mom would do - right?

NEVER up the nose

I had a teacher in art school for an ad design class who embarrassed me in a class critique by showing how i had (stupidly) placed my type in a way that it appeared to be going up the nose of my drawing of a woman's profile. I never forgot this and always make sure to never put anything close to a woman's nose. I almost sent this off with a flower going right up her nose. Overly paranoid? I don't think so. Don't you breathe just a bit easier with the image of the flower AWAY from her nose?!

oh my god this is self indulgent - but it IS my blog - right?
to mark a big birthday i had recently - i asked my old great friend jeffery newbury http://jefferynewbury.com to shoot my portrait. jeffery has shot just about everyone who is anyone and i was thrilled when he said yes. we shared a studio 25 years ago and he did my portrait then, so all these years later, not only did i get new pictures - but we both got a terrible case of poison oak when he shot the pic in the woods. i kept saying, do you know what poison oak looks like because this stuff is making me nervous...he told me not to worry and look into the camera

i loved the turquoise type and bar but the font was not working at all.

the top image is the final cover and i've also posted a few of the covers i did to get there as well as a few covers i found inspiring. turned out all of them but the alice hoffman book were by the same designer - philip pascuzzo. love his work. this was a great and fairly unusual project in that instead of being hired by the publisher and working with an art director, the author herself hired me. her small publisher gave her complete control of her cover. this could have been a nightmare, working with the person who is most attached to how the cover looks, but it was great! a real pleasure.

Custom painting for 40th b-day present

this assignment was a real challenge. i had to take icons
representing the clients wife's life and do something cool.
all the icons on her dress have meaning. it was a tight deadline
and the client was in london during most of the approval process
but was a pleasure to work with and they were really happy with it.
whew!

ISTANBUL

I just got back from the most amazing 2 weeks in Istanbul. It really was the trip of a lifetime. This was the view from my apartment. I took tons of pics of patterns and textures and hope to start painting my 'Istanbul collection' very soon! Here are also pics of my daughter Sonya performing with Herbie Hancock - this show is what got me to Istanbul in the first place!
